Synopsis: "From very ancient times to the present day the menstrual phenomena in women have been the focus around which have developed ideas of horror and guilt, curious taboos and superstitions and a wealth of conversion reactions. In this small monograph Dr. Chadwick has drawn a broad outline of the problem, showing its scope for study and the practical applications of certain facts. The material has been divided into three sections, viz.: Historical, The Menstrual Cycle in Childhood, and the Adult Menstrual Cycle.
In the historical part many interesting relationships between the menstrual functions and the development of witchcraft, as well as the similarities between the characteristics of witches and witch cults and those symptoms encountered in women during the menstrual period and in states connected with the menopause are described in a thought provoking way."
"In this monograph the author advances the extremely interesting theory that the witch-woman was to a great extent the menstruating woman. The theory is based on a rather brief historical accountā€”rather too brief in view of the conclusionā€”of the witch-cult. Miss Chadwick finds support for her theory in the fact that the witch detector was usually said to have 'a wonderfully keen nose for a witch', and the practice was called 'smelling out witches'."
Overall Condition: A very good copy; rebound for Hanna Pavilion library with decorative endpapers, stamps, bookplate and pocket inside. Slight signs of wear and some tanning to pages with clean, clear and unmarked text. = see picture; more images upon request.
