What was her involvment with Doc Holiday, and other notorious figures of the period? What were the reasons for the years of secrecy? And how was she able, finally, to escape her past and settle down to a respectable existence in Deming, New Mexico?
In tracking down clues to Lottie's story, Cynthia Rose presents oral and written accounts by people who knew her well and includes period photographs documenting her life and times. Ms. Rose pieces together a portrait of a vital, courageous woman who retained her standards of propriety, her elegant, independent lifestyle, and her generous spirit amidst the pervasive violence and lawlessness of the Texas frontier.
CYNTHIA ROSE has researched and documented southwestern history and folklore for the past twenty-five years. She has collected oral history in Tennessee, Texas, and New Mexico. Her twelve-year project on Ava Johnson Cox, first cousin to President Lyndon B. Johnson, is part of Special Collections at the Sterling Evans Library at Texas A & M.
LOTTIE DENO: GAMBLING QUEEN OF HEARTS is the product of three years of intensive research of records, documents, photographs, and written and oral accounts of her life. Since 1988, Ms. Rose has been involved in theater and film projects, including documentaries and feature productions, and is presently working on a film about Lottie Deno.
