Synopsis: From the Jacket: What is Mexico? It is a land of unfinished business--"a country yearning to be a nation, wanting to live democratically."

To the outside world, of course, Mexico is a nation-an independent, self-governing country. But the nationhood Victor Alba speaks of-which has not yet been fully achieved is the spirit of national unity among the Mexicans themselves.

Why has this spirit been so long in developing? In his unique analysis of the many peoples, problems, cultures, and foreign and private interests that have combined to produce the Mexicans of today, Mr. Alba looks to Mexico's past. He begins with the confrontation of the Spanish conquerors and the native Aztec civilization and analyzes the impact of three centuries of domination by Spain. He discusses the independence movement of the early 1800's, the difficult years of the nineteenth century, and the democratic Revolution of 1910, vividly describing the dictators and revolutionary heroes that rose and fell in those troubled times.

Mr. Alba believes that the key to understanding the behavior and attitudes of the Mexicans and the contradictions evident in their politics, economic system, and social behavior-is to be found in the transitional, fragmented quality of Mexican life and culture. There is, for Mr. Alba, no such thing as a Mexican or a Mexico-not yet. The historical ingredients are not fully blended;Mexican nationality has yet to emerge an accomplished fact above the divisions of conquering and conquered race, ancient and Western civilization, peon and aristocratic landowner, privileged rulers and subordinate masses. Mr. Alba describes the nature of these divisions and traces their development through Mexico's turbulent history, focusing attention throughout on the Mexican's reaction to his past. Although a Mexican today is likely to have Spanish blood in his veins, he expresses bitterness toward the Spanish conquerors; he speaks of democracy, but he is restrained by centuries of habitual submission to governmental authority.

Most Americans know only-and vaguely -of Mexico's archaeological treasures and colonial past. In THE MEXICANS, the reader will not find a tourist's guide or dramatic biographical account of peasant and bandit heroes. Here is an illuminating examination of the Mexicans' ancient and colonial heritage, their struggle for national independence, their startling democratic revolution, and the challenge they face today to finish the work begun.
