In *God Creates Adam,* first issue in the Gates of Paradise colleciton, contemporary Italian master sculptor Ennio Furiesi selects a vignette from the first panel of Ghiberti's east doors - the panel illustrating the early chapters of the Book of Genesis - and recreates the richly patinated look of the gilded bronze original doors.
With his left hand, God lifts Adam from the earth, inspiriting him with life. God's right hand is held aloft to bestow His divine blessing upon this first man. A host of heavenly angels, their hands in attitudes of prayerful admiration for God's handiwork, celebrate this joyous sixth day of creation.
Maestro Furiesi perfectly adapts the scene to the circular form of the plate and elicits from this traditional format (common in the High Renaissance) heightened visual and dramatic impact. Adam's body describes a segment of an arc concentric with the larger circle. God's head bends gracefully forward, creating with His shoulders and back yet another arc. Even the angels, with their slightly rounded wings and curved bodies, suggest additional circles. The effect of these arcing lines, indicating circle within circle, is the indivisibility of the picture's major visual elements and the resulting solidity of the composition, which holds the eye in continuous orbit between God, Adam and the angels.
Deeply undercut, the figures seem to emerge from their ground, as if disconnected from the material which anchors them. The scrumpulously worked surface creates shadows and highlights which enhance the reality of the relieft sculpture. This is especially apparent in the precisely rendered folds of God's robe, and in the crisply articulated musculature of Adam's body, which intensify the satisfying sense of volume.
Maestro Furies's marvelous descriptive power is further evident in the tactility of the surface which suggests the feel of each texture-God's flowing robes, Adam's skin, the angels feathered wings, and the rough-hewn rocks behind the two major figures.
8-1/2 inches in diameter. Includes a certificate of authenticity, plate numbered: A2242.
