Title: Time & Place
Author: Bryan Woolley
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Texas Christian University Press
ISBN: 9780912646985
Size: 9.50 x 6.50 x 1.00 inches * 245 pages
Synopsis: The book is a novel set in trans-Pecos Texas, specifically the Davis Mountains and in the 1950s. Important events are the drought in the 1950s and the polio epidemic that struck Fort Davis. Number Two in the Texas Tradition Series. Afterword by Tom Pilkington.
Bryan Woolley is the premiere feature writer with the "Dallas Morning News", and has written some great novels set in Texas, including "November 22" and "Sam Bass" for which he won the 1983 Golden Spur Award from Western Writers of America, as well as wonderful collections of his essays about Texas and its varied inhabitants. "Time and Place" is Woolley's second novel. "The time is 1952. The place is a dusty western hamlet called Fort Appleby, a quiet town with old memories - of Indian raids and land grabs, of passions and scandal - memories that still haunt the living. [Also] 1952 is the year the polio epidemic sweeping America reaches this tiny town - destroying lives, upsetting established ways, creating an extraordinary need for human closeness. [This book has] the quality and feel of 'The Last Picture Show' and the nostalgic pull of 'American Graffiti'."
"Time & Place is a moving novel, unafraid of its humanity, willing to be gentle and passionate and even unsentimental. An often humorous, sometimes frightening evocation of the Fifties, in the end it is a courageous and gripping story. And at the heart of Time and Place is a real decency too often lacking in the literature of this cynical age." - John Nichols
