Favorite Story is an old time radio series that did dramatic adaptations of famous and classic literature. This genre of old time radio was very popular, and it was quite a crowded market when Favorite Story was released in 1946. Two things set Favorite Story apart from some of the other old time radio shows doing the same thing, first , it washosted by Ronald Colman, who was very popular at that time. Also the producers used a nice pick of stories to dramatize, everything from Frankenstein to Wuthering Heights.
Favorite Story was one of the big successes of the Ziv syndication network. It's said that Fred Ziv guaranteed Ronald Colman 150,000$ a year, plus a cut, just for being the host. That would be a big contract even today. But again, it was the stories that helped make it as popular as it was as an old time radio show. It's always nice to have a good 'mix' when you do a series like this. Most of the stories used had a built in audience simply becasue they were already read by many beforehand. Besides using such great stories, Favorite Story had many famous old time radio actors in the series such as William Conrad, Herb Butterfield, and Raymond Burr.
Favorite Story is very similar to other old time radio shows like Ford Theater, Author's Playhouse, Campbell Playhouse, and more. You would think that listeners would get bored of hearing the same stories get dramatized on radio, but they didn't, and Favorite Story went on to have over 150 episodes produced.
As an added bonus to today's old time radio listener is that all but a few of these episodes have been preserved at a very high bit rate. That doesn't always translate into perfect sound quality, but it sure helps. Please listen to the sample episode to get a feel for the quality of this series. There are 78 episodes, each from 25-30 minutes long, on a 3 Disc MP3 CD set.
