Another term used is "nosegay." These were usually given for a special occasion or memory by someone who wants to acknowledge it to another. In Victorian times flowers were used to communicate a message and flowers symbolic meaning depending on the color and kind of flower given in the tussie mussie.
The giving of white violets means, "Faithfulness."
