Like most of the Torch Gingers, this one has edible flower buds. The edible torch gingers are commonly called 'bunga kantan' in Malaysia.
Despite their usefullness, they are invasive in many tropical areas of the world for their fast-spreading rhizomes and ability to form dense thickets underneath tropical canopies.
Many gardeners use rhizomes to propagate red torch ginger. Using this method, torch ginger bears flowers within one year. Torch ginger rhizomes grow in a mat.
