Alluaudia procera (or Madagascar ocotillo) is native to the semi-arid areas of southern Madagascar. It resembles Fouquieria splendens (Ocotillo) which lives in a comparable habitat on the American continent and which gave it its nickname. This is an example of evolutionary convergence
In Madagascar the thick stems and dried branches are used for construction, carpentry and for making charcoal
In its middle it forms bushes made up of vertical rigid thorny stems reaching 18 meters in height. But in culture, it does not exceed 3 meters.
The species is appreciated for the aesthetics of the stems which are vertical, thick and grayish in color. These stems bear rows of thorns implanted in a very regular fashion. As well as rows of small bright green leaves, also very regular, which are inserted between the rows of thorns. These lines are either vertical or slightly spiral.
The leaves are deciduous in times of drought.
