Synopsis: From the jacket: Cookies have been made experimentally with ground-up chicken feathers replacing some of the flour. Imitation cheese has been made out of banana peels, ground-up buttons, and umbrella handles.
As food costs have continued to rise, more and more food producers have sought to develop cheaper imitations of the real thing. Ground beef is extended by adding inferior soy protein, which absorbs up to four times its weight in water and helps to retain fat. Coffee creamers are made out of water, hydrogenated oil, sodium caseinate solids, sugar, and a host of chemical additives. Cherries are fabricated by allowing drops of a mixture of sodium alginate to fall into a calcium bath.
