Synopsis: From the jacket: The Gospels offer no consistent reason for the death of Jesus. This book, in recreating that mystery-shrouded event, returns Jesus to his own time not as a man of universal peace, but as a national leader of political violence, the reason for whose agonizing execution prevents the easy assumption that it is only the depths of time that have gently obscured the career of this actual man. The Gospels reveal in their editorial contradictions that they purposely hide a far different story than that on which Christianity is based. The search for the essential character and historic mission of Jesus falls back ultimately on the impoverished and enigmatic information of the Gospels, which, although they tell the story of an individual called Christ, we never quite see just what he was like, or what he was trying to do.

In order to make historical sense of the life of Jesus, Mr. Carmichael has found an astounding key in the mystery of his death. Why was Jesus killed?

Throughout the New Testament, Jesus is presented as a Jew preaching to other Jews on matters of interest only to Jews; yet it is the Jews who seem finally responsible for his death. But in fact he is executed by the Romans on the Roman charge that he had proclaimed himself King of the Jews and a temporal power in competition with Rome. The charge held against him by the Jews are religious and of no interest to the Romans, while the Roman charge on which he is executed is expressly denied.

Something is missing, and its loss causes the Gospels as history to become inherently unintelligible.

In asking hard historical questions, Mr. Carmichael restores the undoubted nature of Jesus' crime: sedition, and, in the seizing of the temple, insurrection.

Here may be the ultimate essential key to the career of Jesus: the Gospels were written when the evolving Christian sect failed bitterly to win hostile Jews to the universal, divine and glorified meaning of the Crucifixion, and the Gospel writers turned for converts to the pagan masses of the Roman Empire. Anything that goes against the Gospel tendency of universalizing, divinizing and glorifying the man Jesus into the Godly Christ is more probable historically. The application of this key to unlock the many mysteries of the Gospels is a work of fascinating historical detection, and Jesus returned to his own times and his own role remains as mighty a figure as before.

Joel Carmichael started this study under a scholarship in Ancient Oriental Languages at Oxford University. But this book is a continuation of the work of those who recognized the rights of history, and who, as Schweitzer puts it, "tried to bring Jesus to life at the call of love, and found it a cruel task to be honest."
