Synopsis: From the Jacket: Elbert Hubbard is regarded by many as the most original thinker of his generation. An indefatigable worker, he found time to edit two magazines, manage a publishing plant, and lecture betweenwhiles.
In this very presentable volume are served three of his most characteristic and vital shorter messages-papers which he would undoubtedly be pleased to see thus perpetuated if he were still with us. They are naturally headed by that little classic of endeavor. "A Message to Garcia." The author tells in a Preface how this came to be written. It was dashed off in a single hour after supper, one evening during the Spanish-American War. Hubbard's eye had caught in the daily papers the story of a lieutenant in the army, Rowan, who had been instructed by President McKinley to find Garcia, the Cuban leader, and deliver a message into his hands. The story was inserted in the edition of The Philistine just going to press, without a heading and at the back of the magazine. Presently orders began to come in for extra copies, and no one knew why until George H. Daniels of the New York Central Railroad ordered 100,000 copies by telegraph. Then the Director of the Russian railways took it up and sent it, in translated form, all over his lines. And so it has gone on around the world.
Other messages scarcely less worth while, which are here included, are "The Boy from Missouri Valley," and "Help Yourself by Helping the House. They are worth reading more than once, for each is a straight-from-the-shoulder shot, sent in kindly spirit yet with unerring aim.
Overall Condition: The book has been read but is in good condition. It has no issues to the cover, including scuff marks, holes or tears. The dust jacket has some wear and is included. The binding has minimal wear. The pages are undamaged with no creasing or tearing, with some light pencil underlining of text and two brackets in the margins but no highlighting of text. There are no missing pages; see images.
