Synopsis: From the FOREWORD: DURING the spring of 1925 I was very busy making preparations for a new venture-that of performing the aerial work for the MacMillan Arctic Expedition. Then one day in May in the office of the Secretary of the Navy, Mr. Wilbur, I met Carl Lomen. That meeting was of special interest to me when I learned that he was one of the Lomens of Nome, who had spent many years in the North Country and had pioneered in the reindeer industry of Alaska. The Lomens were expert in the technique of winter travel by both dogs and reindeer, and had adapted the arctic dress of the Eskimo-parkas, fur pants, mukluks, mittens, and sleeping bags-for the use of arctic travelers, drawing on their large herds for choice skins for such purposes. The admirable nature of these products bore eloquent testimony to the Lomen mastery of the art of polar travel.
Returning with MacMillan in the fall, I felt that a flight from Spitzbergen to the North Pole and back was feasible. I got in touch with my Alaska friend, requesting that he have made for my pilot, Floyd Bennett, and me complete fur outfits for such a flight, together with a small hickory sled to carry in the plane should there be a forced landing necessitating an ice trip back to civilization.
The trip proved successful; the winter clothing perfect for the purpose. Later Carl and his brothers supplied my first two Antartic Expeditions with reindeer-fur clothing, sleeping bags, and much of our foot gear.
Now I learn that after these many years, Carl has written for publication his story and that of the Alaska reindeer industry, and I am delighted to contribute a foreword to the book of a man who has lived a most varied and interesting life in northwestern Alaska for a half century, and whose experiences and recollections of a pioneer country will prove of great interest and value to the American people.

Overall Condition: Good + It has very minimal wear to the cover and no holes or tears. The dust jacket is not included. The binding has minimal wear. The pages are undamaged with no creasing or tearing, no pencil underlining of text, no highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. There are no missing pages; see images.
