It blends frontier history, ethnography, and personal observations to present a compelling portrait of the Comanche as warriors, horsemen, and a people whose culture significantly shaped the history of the American West.
From The Foreword: The late J. Emmor Harston was well qualified to write about the Comanches. He was born at Jacksboro, on the Texas frontier, November 16, 1864. For many years he lived among the Indians, and at an early age learned the language of the Comanche, the Kiowa and the Wichita.
The boy's father, Captain J. D. Harston, was an Indian trader having had stores at several army posts prior to his connection with the trader store at Fort Sill in 1871. The father being a friend to the Indians, it was natural that the son should share in the friendship. The elderly Indians especially took a liking to the white boy, who knew all of them by name and showed an eagerness to learn from them. The Comanches gave him the name of Nod-e-mah Ta-o-yo, meaning Little Trader Boy.
At an early age Harston became convinced that the Comanches had been greatly wronged by the whites. With the passing of the years, the conviction became stronger. He understood why the Indians acted as they did and came to know the workings of their minds.
His gradually became a dedicated life - dedicated to the Comanches. After coming to know them so well, he was sympathetic and tolerant of their shortcomings and became very anxious for them to receive credit where credit was due. He championed their cause, bearing in mind that for many years they had fought for their homeland - just as in later wars they were to fight for the United States.
