Synopsis: A work of historical horse fiction. Drawings by Frederick T. Chapman.
From the Jacket:Three centuries before the story begins Hernan Cortes brought a beautiful Arabian stallion to Mexico. Somehow he escaped from the Spanish Conqueror, and thereafter his legend grew. Years later in the Rio Grande country men claimed to have seen the silver horse racing wild and free in the moonlight. The Lonely One, they called him, or the Silver Loneliness. No one could lay hand on him, but sometimes ranchers found silver foals running with their herds, although he never killed range stallions or stole their mares. His decendants all bore the distinctive marks of the great Arab strain. When the silver stallion died no one knew, for the border folk claimed to see him still. Chela, thirteen-year-old granddaughter of the good doctor Don Diego, first learned of the legend when she received a fiesta gift: a tiny silver statue of a winged horse, wrought with exquisite workmanship, springing from a base of carved ebony. Somehow the little figure embodied all the beauty, all the wild desire for freedom of the legendary stallion. From that moment he lived in her imagination. Would she ever see the Silver Loneliness, running as fleet as a hawk on the wing in the moonlight?
Late one night Chela was riding home across the range. Suddenly she felt her pony tremble beneath her, saw his ears sharply cocked. He stopped and came rigidly to attention. Then, out of the north, she heard the phantom drumming of unshod hoofs in full gallop. An instant later she caught her breath and tears stood in her with wonder. For the wild one racing eyes
toward her was her winged image made flesh. Moonlight quickened the oncoming stallion into a thing of silver. His tail and mane, lifted like banners, were silvery mist. His dark eyes shone with moon madness and the joyous surge of his own power.
Even when, in the morning sunlight, Chela found the stallion's hoofprints she could hardly believe that her silvery vision had not been a dream. Yet that first, unforgettable glimpse of the silver stallion was only the beginning of an experience that filled Chela with delight and awe. For the stallion returned-indeed, the day came when she could even call him her friend. And his destiny shaped Chela's life and the quest she followed, as well as the life of young Joaquin and Mari who came to Don Diego's ranch.
The dramatic story of the silver stallion is one of the best tales Elizabeth Bleecker Meigs has written. The colorful background of old Mexico-the busy ranches, the great round-ups, the pageantry of village fiestas, the beauty of the moonlit range-all enhance a vivid story of the rare companionship between an understanding child and the fabled Silver Loneliness.
