Captain Caution: A Chronicle of Arundel by Kenneth Roberts Doubleday, Doran and Co 1943 Reprint
Title: Captain Caution: A Chronicle of Arundel
Author: Kenneth Roberts
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Doubleday, Doran and Co 1943
Edition: Reprint
Size: 5.5 X 7.25 X 1.25 * 310 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: CAPTAIN CAUTION covers a hitherto unknown phase of American participation in the War of 1812.
The book's chief character is Daniel Marvin, an Arundel mariner. Associated with him in his adventures are Corunna Dorman, seafaring daughter of an Arundel shipmaster; Lucien Argandeau, a French privateer captain whose peculiar knowledge of the English language has been gained through intimate association with a Boston rabbit"; Lurman Slade, captain of an American slave-brig; and Matthew Newton, a Harvard graduate who becomes Marvin's fight manager. How history repeats itself is shown by the bootleggers, gangsters, grafting politicians, demimondaines, slavers, privateersmen and corrupt society that thronged England and France in 1812.
Among the stirring high lights are Marvin's imprisonment in the hold of a British gun-brig, his battle to retake the brig from his captors, his prizefight aboard a British hulk, his escape to France, his invention of the Gangway Pendulum, and his final engagement off Madeira with the brig commanded by his enemy, Slade.
CAPTAIN CAUTION is a rare combination of high literary quality, rapid action, keen humor, skillful character drawing, and historical accuracy a combination that is not only inducing universities and the best preparatory schools to turn to Kenneth Roberts's books for a proper understanding of history, but is causing outstanding literary critics to class his novels with those of Tolstoi, Victor Hugo and Stephen Crane.
