Size: 5.75 X 8.5 * 242 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: ON SEPTEMBER 15, 1865, one of the greatest American soldiers and aristocrats left Tidewater, Virginia, to move into what must have seemed like certain oblivion. Fours years earlier, after much anguish, Robert E. Lee had decided to resign from the U. S. Army and lead the hopelessly outnumbered Confederate forces. That army was destroyed now, and Lee, branded by many a traitor, seemed destined to spend his final years as a prisoner on parole.
But instead of going into oblivion, Robert E. Lee rose to great usefulness and even to immortality. The tired old soldier, taking over as President of Washington College, left a deeper mark on America's history in the four years after Appomattox than he and his troops had made during the war years. In this book. Professor Fishwick (who teaches at Washington and Lee, the modern name for Lee's old school) gives us a close and sympathetic view of the General after the war, and states his case for Lee's ultimate greatness.
When the man of war becomes a man of peace, where are the new battlegrounds? As you follow Lee over the Blue Ridge and into the Valley of Virginia. you will not only find that question answered, but also many others that have not been dealt with in previous books on this great Southern leader. Here, then, is a fascinating new interpretation of one of the greatest and most generous men of American history.
MARSHALL FISHWICK was born in Roanoke, Virginia, graduated from the University of Virginia, took his M.A. at the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. at Yale. Besides being Professor of American Studies at Washington and Lee, in Lexington, Virginia, he is a well-known public speaker and has been a Fulbright lecturer in Denmark and Germany and guest lecturer for the State Department in England, Sweden, France and Poland. He is the author of many books including, among others, GENERAL LEE'S PHOTOGRAPHER and GENTLEMEN OF VIRGINIA. His articles have appeared in a number of magazines, notably the American Heritage and the Saturday Review.
