The Pacific Islands Year Book by R. W. Robson Pacific Publications (Fuji) LTD 1944 5th (Wartime) Edition
Title: The Pacific Islands Year Book
Author: R. W. Robson
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Pacific Publications (Fuji) LTD 1944
Edition: 5th (Wartime) Edition
Size: 5.5 X 8.5 * 383 pages
Synopsis:
FOREWORD: The production of this edition, like the last, has been attended by extraordinary wartime difficulties. Most of my assistants are away on war service; communication and transport have made it impossible, in many cases, to collect necessary data; and paper-the raw material of a dozen industries-is a scarce and valuable commodity in Australia. This book was ready for printing in February; but the problem of obtaining sufficient paper delayed publication for months.
Wartime difficulties made it impossible to meet, from Australian production, the United States demand for the book; so the North American publication rights were sold to MacMillans, the well-known New York publishers. A condensation of this book, which retains all the most valuable features, will be published shortly by MacMillans, as "The Pacific Islands Handbook."
The matter in this (the fifth) edition has been completely re-arranged, upon a more convenient basis of geography and ethnology. The new arrangement is explained on page 6. Most of the Commercial and Residential Directories have been omitted from this edition, because it was impossible, under wartime conditions, to get anything near accuracy. But a number of useful maps, and a complete new section, "Indonesia-the Far Western Pacific," have been added.
New matter includes a description, compiled from old official records, of how the Europeans penetrated the Pacific in the 19th Century (see article attached to Samoa section, and introduction to New Guinea section); and an account of how the collapse of France in 1940 affected the Pacific Colonies (see introduction to New Caledonia).
All human life in the Pacific countries to-day is affected by the great war that has developed, because of our resistance to the Japanese invasion, and the determination of the Anglo-American nations, with the Dutch and the Chinese, to break the power of Japan. Therefore. much attention is given in this book to events connected with the war. There is, in Section I, a History of the war, and a complete Chronology of events, up to March, 1944; and, at the beginning of each section, there is a panel containing a brief description of the way in which that particular Territory has been affected by war conditions.
I again express my thanks, for assistance willingly and courteously given. to the Departmental chiefs of the Governments of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Western Samoa, the High Commission of the Western Pacific, and the executive officers of the several Missionary bodies. I especially am indebted to the high officials of the Netherlands Indies, for much carefully-prepared data: to Mr. E. H. Bryan, Jun., of the Bishop Museum staff, Honolulu, for permission to reproduce some of the excellent maps from his book, "American Polynesia"; and to Mr. P. T. English, an administrative officer of the Western Pacific High Commission, for permission to publish his detailed map of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands.
Overall Condition: Acceptable: The book has obvious wear with both hinges cracked. It has some wear to the cover, but its integrity is intact. There is no writing in the margins or underlining and highlighting of text, and there are no missing pages or anything that would compromise the legibility or understanding of the text. See images.
