Synopsis: From the Jacket: THIS SKILLFULLY written biography presents for family reading the life story of Vinnie Ream Hoxie, who at nineteen began her sculpture of the statue of Lincoln which now stands in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Beautiful, gifted, and charming, Vinnie was, from her birth in 1847 to her death in 1914, one of the most colorful figures of a picturesque era in American history. As a young and untried artist she won the unusual privilege of being allowed to model Lincoln's head while he worked at his White House desk. She pioneered in a field open to few women, and triumphed; she was commissioned to do many statues including one of the nation's heroes, Admiral David Farragut. She enjoyed as well a lively social life that resulted in her marriage to handsome Lieutenant Richard L. Hoxie.
In this vivid portrait Gordon Langley Hall has not only captured the gentle spirit of a remarkable woman but the full flavor of a significant and memorable time.
About the Author
GORDON LANGLEY HALL'S successful writing career began at the age of four, when he won a prize in a short-story contest. The author of eleven books, two plays, and numerous magazine and newspaper articles, he likes to think himself a cause writer, choosing only those subjects he judges worth while.
Mr. Hall's interest in Vinnie Ream was first aroused when he realized that she was a woman with an idea and a purpose. After doing extensive research on this subject in the United States, he retraced Vinnie's European trip through Paris and Rome to the marble quarries at Carrara. The result is a warm picture of one of the most talented and admired women of her time.
