Author: Dannie Abse
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Crown Publishers 1969

Synopsis: From the Jacket: 220 illustrations, of which 71 are in full color.
Until recently "the miracle of modern medicine" was taken for granted, together with the record of countless lives saved and of diseases conquered or prevented by the new wonder drugs. It seemed that medical research would soon find the answer to all diseases.
Then doubts began to surface. The term "side effects" crept into everyday language. The layman began to read of "penicillin-resistant bacteria," and penicillin-best-known of all the wonder drugs-swayed on its pedestal. Cortisone-the drug that for rheumatic sufferers had seemed synonymous with "cure"-turned out to be of severely limited value. The sinister phrase "drug- induced diseases" came into medical terminology. The thalidomide babies made their tragic headlines.
As doctors everywhere continued to pour an ever-increasing number of drugs into their patients, controversy raged about such issues as addiction, tranquillizers, LSD, and the contraceptive pill. Acupuncturists and other fringe healers found that the sick still turned to them in despair or desperation. Not only in the USA, but in many other countries, investigatory commissions were set up to examine the cost of drugs-in terms of health and of money-to the community. It seems, now, time to take stock.
In Medicine on Trial Dannie Abse attempts a balanced assessment of the present situation in its historical perspective. His viewpoint is that of a liberal writer who is not overawed by his orthodox medical training. His summing-up of the successes and failures of modern medicine is always lively, always informed and informative. And in the end-simply because he eschews sensationalism-those chapters of Medicine on Trial that are critical of modern medical practice are more deeply disturbing than any hysterical polemic against the drug industry or the medical profession.
