Spanning the years from the arrival in America of Morris Gershovitz, George's and Ira's father, to the present, this well conceived volume is full of anecdotes and stories, as those of how Rhapsody in Blue came to be written, how Ira first attempted lyric writing while working as a steam-bath attendant, and of George's early days as a song plugger at Remick's and as a rehearsal accompanist.
There are pictures of Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, the Astaires, Gertrude Lawrence, Maurice Ravel; scenes from musicals and movies; snapshots from the family album; sketches and paintings by George and Ira; and many of George's own photographs of his associates.
The book includes a bibliography of all the Gershwins' compositions, complete with show sources and dates of first performances.
THE GERSHWIN YEARS will be treasured by Gershwin fans, invaluable to musicologists, and fascinating reading for all who enjoy a colorful documentary of of the Twenties and Thirties.
Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. There is no obvious damage to the cover the dust jacket (if applicable) is included for hard covers. There are no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. It may have very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover as well as very minimal wear and tear; see images.
