Terracide by Ron Linton is unlike any other book on environment or conservation published today. It has been written to give us an understandable overview of conditions as they exist, and to tell us what might be done to reduce assaults on our personalities and our surroundings.
Ron Linton is one of a new breed of men today's environmentalistsβa concerned, outspoken group of professionals who are attempting to combat the disastrous consequences of the misuse of our precious natural environment. Terracide is both a vital exploration of our despoiled urban and country life and a startling testimony to the effect this destruction has on our daily lives.
This is an extremely readable book that allows the concerned layman to become an angered expert on the extent of, causes, and responsible solutions to, our environmental problems. There is a human dimension in Terracide lacking other works which have appeared on the same topic, in that Ron Linton discusses the effects which noise, stench, and overcrowding now have on our personalities and our ways of reacting, socially and sexually, to one another.
Section one of Terracide deals with these human reactions to our fouled nest. Section two deals with commercial and industrial sins of pollution and a discussion of the specific abuses to our wildlife and natural resources that the "new technology" has produced. The third and concluding section of Terracide tells what must be done to solve our environmental problems: 1. Man must commit himself to the establishment of a population policy including the distribution of birth control information; 2. The opportunity must be provided for rural residents to make their living without moving into urban areas; 3. New towns must be created with built-in standards and safeguards against environmental deterioration; and 4. Substantial public funds must be allocated to rectify deterioration, and federal, state and local governments must set standards for improvements.
Terracide is an important book, both frightening and encouraging, for it makes clear to all Americans that the time of complete pollution of the earth is close at hand and that the opportunity for saving the air and land, for ourselves and our wildlife, is equally near.
Ron Linton was the chairman of the Secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare's Task Force on Environmental Health and Related Problems. He has been advisor to John W. Gardner, chairman of the Urban Coalition, and was national coordinator of this organization for a year. He is now chairman of the Technical Assistance Committee, U.S. Conference of City Health Officers, and a member of the Committee on Environmental Health, American Public Health Association. Mr. Linton, who is the managing partner in Linton, Mields and Coston, consultants in urban and environmental programs, is also visiting professor in Environmental and Urban Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Linton lives in Washington with his wife and two daughters.
