I speak sincerely when I say I will never forget the 1969 Texas game and I feel safe in saying that the people of Arkansas and Texas and the many throughout the nation who watched the excellent game on TV will also long remember this spectacle.
You must realize that the chances are very slight for persons such as the players, coaches and fans of Arkansas and Texas to take part in such a historic occasion as that game. It was a distinct honor to have in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the President of the United States, the Reverend Billy Graham, the nation's top sportswriters and all the wonderful football fans who crowded into Razorback Stadium.
This game was competition in the truest sense of the word. You saw twenty-two athletes on the field throughout the heat of battle, giving all they had for their teams. This is the American way of giving unselfishly for a cause. Not only was this exhibition good for the respective schools of the Southwest Conference; it was a showcase for college football.

The 1969 Arkansas-Texas game was college football as the fans like to see it-exciting plays, thrilling interceptions and dazzling runs. It was personalities, color and music, some cautious and some daring strategy, and tremendous releases of pent-up energy. It was the kind of game in which every player will be proud he played as long as he lives. It was also the
kind of game that increases the chances that a coach will have ulcers and heart attacks.
The 1969 Arkansas-Texas game capped America's first century of college football. Sportswriters have called it the "game of the century" and I am both humble and proud that the Longhorns and the Southwest Conference were cast in prominent roles.
Neal Blanton undertook a formidable task in this book about a single game and all the factors surrounding it. But this game did provide a book full of action, characters, plots and sub-plots. In just about every way this game typifies why American college football holds such fascination for fans, for players and even for coaches. And, knowing what I know now, I'd much rather read about it than have to play it again.
