Synopsis: From the Jacket: In Two Faces of Janus, J. Oliver Emmerich maintains that the Deep South of legend (and, indeed, of history) has died- that racism and violence are things of the past, from whose ashes has risen a phoenix of tolerance, positive thinking, and honest self- examination. Emmerich compares the faces of the Old and the New South with the ancient Roman god Janus-the diety which presides over doors and gates, commonly represented with two faces looking in opposite directions. Emmerich refers to cotton as the Janus of the South, for cotton, he contends, "has been both a blessing and a curse to the South." He says the South has had two heritages, "the American heritage deeply engrained in freedom and the Southern heritage which is deeply rooted in slavery and the two have been in conflict."
Emmerich discusses some of the demagogues who molded the Old South-"Pitchfork Ben" Tillman, the "Great White Chief" Jim Vardaman, "Tom Tom" Heffin, "King Fish" Huey Long-devoting a chapter to a portrait of Theodore Bilbo, a fiery orator who was elected governor and left such a deficit in the state treasury his successor had to give his personal check to buy groceries for the inmates of the State Mental Hospital.
The personality of the South is described in the "dipping vat war," a federal program to eradicate the cattle tick. Southerners resisted the government's efforts to de-tick their livestock, and the program, begun during World War I, was not completed until 1929.
The author gives his version of the famous incident of Ross Barnett's refusal to allow James Meredith to enroll at the University of Mississippi: of the "long, hot summer" of 1964, when chaos and violence reigned and of his own attempts to act as a voice of moderation through his newspaper editorials. In conclusion, Emmerich writes of changes, not only in the laws, but in the attitude of whites and blacks: "What has recently happened in the Deep South can be truthfully described as something very close to a miracle."
Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. There is no obvious damage to the cover the dust jacket (if applicable) is included for hard covers. There are no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. It may have very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover as well as very minimal wear and tear; see images.
