Properties and action
Maltofer is an iron medicine for the treatment of latent iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. Iron is an important constituent of hemoglobin, myoglobin and enzymes that contain iron. The treatment of iron deficiency in children up to one year is very important. Iron deficiency in this age can affect brain development. Iron deficiency may be the cause of chronic fatigue, lack of concentration, irritability, nervousness, headache, lack of appetite, increased susceptibility to stress and infections, paleness, cracks in the corners of the mouth (cracks), dry skin, brittle hair and nails, as well as loss of interest in games for children. Maltofer iron droplets in the form of iron III hydroxide polymaltose complex, wherein the single particles are embedded in a carbohydrate polymer (polymaltose). This protection prevents interactions between iron and food and provides the bioavailability of iron.
The structure of Maltofer is similar to ferritin - a natural depot of iron in the body. Following this similarity, iron is absorbed through natural mechanisms of absorption. Iron III hydroxide polymaltose complex will prooksidativni properties as divalent iron salts.

How much to take
Always take MALTOFER exactly as your medical practitioner or pharmacist has told you. You should check with your medical practitioner or pharmacist if you are not sure.
MALTOFER Tablets contain 100 mg iron and should not be divided to take lower doses than 100 mg iron. In cases where lower doses are required, MALTOFER oral liquid forms (Syrup or Drops) should be used.
Treatment of iron deficiency in adults and adolescents (Children ≥12 years) where the use of ferrous iron supplements is not tolerated, or otherwise inappropriate, take 100 mg to 200 mg iron (1 to 2 tablets, 10 - 20 mL syrup, or 40-80 drops) daily preferably with food, or higher doses as directed by your medical practitioner.
Prevention of iron deficiency in adults and adolescents (Children ≥12 years) at high risk where the use of ferrous iron supplements is not tolerated, or otherwise inappropriate, take 100 mg iron (1 tablet, 10 mL syrup, or 40 drops) daily preferably with food, or higher doses as directed by your medical practitioner.
You should consult your medical practitioner regularly to monitor your iron status (e.g. serum ferritin levels) during therapy.
Contraindications
Overloading the body with iron (hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis) or disturbances in utilization of iron (anemia due to lead poisoning, sideroahrestichna anemia, thalassemia) and anemia not caused by iron deficiency (hemolytic anemia).

Special warnings and precautions for use
Note for diabetics: 0.01 bread units per ml (20 drops).
In people with hereditary fructose intolerance, glucose / galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase / isomaltase deficiency.
In the case of anemia due to infection or malignancy, the substituted iron is stored in the reticuloendothelial system of which is mobilized and distributed only after treatment of the primary disease.

Interactions
So far, no interactions were observed. When the iron is complex-bound, not observed ionic interactions with the components of the food / phytin, oxalates, tannin and the like. / Or concomitant medication / tetracycline and antacids /.
Haemoccult test / specific hemoglobin / detection of occult / hidden / bleeding is not disturbed, so there is no need to interrupt treatment with iron.
Pregnancy and lactation
Pregnancy Category A:
Reproductive studies in animals have shown no risk to the fetus. Controlled studies in pregnant women after the first trimester, do not indicate any adverse effects on the mother and fetus. No evidence of risk during the first trimester and unintended negative impact on the fetus. The application of Maltofer drops does not lead to adverse effects on the infant.
During pregnancy and lactation, Maltofer drops should be taken only after consulting a doctor or pharmacist.

Adverse reactions
Occasionally gastrointestinal irritation as a feeling of fullness, heaviness in the epigastric (upper abdomen), nausea, constipation or diarrhea.
Dark colored stool in connection with iron is not clinically significant.
Maltofer drops do not cause dark staining of the teeth.

Overdose
Neither intoxication nor iron overload observed in case of overdose.
