Zions Cause 1920-1950 by Jim Peyton Algonquin Books 1987 First Edition
Title: Zions Cause 1920-1950
Author: Jim Peyton
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Algonquin Books 1987
Edition: First Edition
ISBN 10: 0912697547
Size: 5.25 X 7.25 * 224 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: This is a story about a town, with a store and a church. It's also about that first preacher who came in the cause of Zion, healed a few bodies, planted a new one, named the town, and then disappeared:
"... that little mule, belly deep in a swirl of dust, gliding along as if on wheels, and he astride in black frock coat and
hat, white shirt and black string tie, and it the middle of August.
...And when it came, his voice had a hollow ring, as if, someone said, he was talking into a bucket. And he said to Mr. Hayes, 'I come in the cause of Zion.'"
It's about the church members and shoppers at Mr. Hayes's store-Will Poser, for instance, who lived a dry life and dug himself a deep, dry well where he found peace; Odie Poser, who died young on horseback, whose tombstone was in the shape of a centaur. It's about the preachers that followed that first one-Brother Bois, for example, "a stick of a man [who'd] poke you to death to sleep in the bed with him," who floundered in his efforts to baptize big Lucinda Blackburn. It's about the new body planted by the healer and how it was born and raised in Mr. Hayes's store, how it grew up to tell this story.
Finally, it is the story of a little town in Kentucky, with a church and a store, that disappeared under the rising waters of "progress."
To stress this novel's mythic qualities would be to make it sound ponderous, which it is not. It is a love story, joyful and funny. But because it is as wise as it is wild, it is, indeed, mythic. Jim Peyton's remarkable first book is as different from most first novels as 60 years of thinking about life are different from 25.
Jim Peyton was born in Paducah, Kentucky, in 1926. He holds the GED instead of a high school diploma and received his PhD in science education from the University of Kentucky. Now retired, Jim Peyton taught on the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels before joining the Kentucky state government as an educational adviser to the governor's office and Deputy Director of Kentucky's Legislative Research Commission. Although this is his first novel, several of his plays have been produced on stage and television.
