Synopsis: From the Jacket: Publication of a new novel by Alfred Leland Crabb is the best kind of news to his large following of loyal readers. Here between these covers is his latest.

It is a heart-warming story of life in a young Kentucky community-some six decades of it-from the pioneer times of 1803, when Jacob Skiles and his family reached the land he had purchased three miles outside Bowling Green, up to the days just following the War between the States. Through three generations of the Skiles family, it chronicles the growth of the isolated village into a thriving city. Jacob Skiles was himself responsible for the improvement of the roads and the presence of steamboats on the Barren and the Green. But soon after this prosperity was achieved, the war broke out, splitting this border community with a tragic division. At the war's end, Bowling Green faced bravely the task of healing the scars of division and making neighbors once more out of late enemies. Though the years of fighting made a grim period, Alfred Leland Crabb has on the whole a hopeful tale to tell.

Peace at Bowling Green is a most beguiling book. Though the serious message the book conveys is important and heartfelt, Dr. Crabb has room to offer a great deal of pleasure and fun. The people of The story are fine; good solid citizens like the Skileses and the Shobes, the Covingtons and the old Judge, full of good sense and kindness, and remarkable characters such as Bill Willie Blewett (whose role may suggest the Driver's in earlier Crabb books) and testy Uncle Trez Covington. There are the great social get-togethers and feasts of the frontier, with expert fiddling, much good talk and gargantuan quantities of mouth-watering food, especially the gatherings known as Country Court Days. These Kentuckians display kindness and natural good manners and genuine gracious living. And the story's romantic interludes contribute a broad and pleasant strand of sentiment.

There is good comedy, too, rich and often unexpected comedy. There is, for instance, the way the old Judge handles his political campaign when a young lawyer seeks to win his well-worn seat on the bench, or Uncle Trez Covington's horse dealings, or half a dozen of the exploits of the irrepressible Bill Willie Blewett.

A great many historic figures move across these pages-Felix Grundy, Andrew Jackson, General Simon Bolivar Buckner.
In the sixty-odd years which the story covers, the people around Bowling Green lived a many-sided life, finding much pleasure and satisfaction along with frontier hardship and the tragedy of war. Peace at Bowling Green opens that life to you in all of its variety. The most ambitious of Dr. Crabb's fine books, it is also the most rewarding.

Overall Condition: Good + The book has been read but is in good condition. It has no issues to the cover, including scuff marks, holes or tears. The dust jacket has some wear and is included.
