Synopsis: A very nice example from the prominent Soviet novelist of the Soviet Novel at war's end before the Cold War.
A novel about Stalingrad during World War II, where the German invasion was stopped, at enormous human cost. Author was a decorated journalist and war correspondent who also wrote plays, poetry and novels. His play "Russian People" won the Stalin Prize in 1942. His experiences in Stalingrad form the basis of this novel, said to be the first non-political novel to come out of the Soviet Union. It sold more than 400,000 copies in the Soviet Union.
The tale of seventy days and nights in which a young Red Army officer seized and held three apartment houses in Stalingrad, unmasked and killed a traitor, learned the skills of house-to-house fighting with heavy modern weapons, fell deeply in love with a Red Army nurse, and wrestled with the problems of leading men through defeat into heartbreakingly hopeless battle.

Overall Condition: A very good copy with solid boards showing moderate wear and a sun faded spine. No dustjacket. The binding is tight and the text is clean with no writing or underlining. = see picture; more images upon request.
