Synopsis: From the Jacket: "Interzone" was the working title for the novel William S. Burroughs composed from roughly 1953 through 1958-a work that, when finally published under the title Naked Lunch, revolutionized the modern novel. Burroughs' readers will recognize the "interzone" as the dream-like locus of so much of his fiction, an imagined world where the laws of time and space and conventional human personality are suspended, where everything is both possible and permitted. In 1984 the original "Interzone/Naked Lunch" manuscript, once thought lost, was rediscovered among Allen Ginsberg's papers at Columbia University: it included a long, corruscating, emetically brilliant section titled "WORD" that had been cut, save for a few scattered fragments, from the final manuscript of Naked Lunch. This climactic text, written with the white heat of Burroughs' later style, is the ultimate chapter in the new Interzone, an important collection of his work from the mid-1950s consisting of short stories, routines, letters, and note- book entries. These works brilliantly capture Burroughs' transformation from the precise, laconic and deadpan writer of Junky and Queer to the radical, uncompromising seer of Naked Lunch. Many of these writings have seen publication only in fragmentary form until now; others have never before been published.
Interzone will be recognized immediately by readers, critics, and students of William S. Burroughs as an indispensable addition to the canon of his works.
WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS is the author of numerous prose works, including Junky, Naked Lunch, Queer, and the trilogy consisting of Cities of the Red Night, The Place of Dead Roads, and The Western Lands. He divides his time between New York City and Lawrence, Kansas.
